Lee County tax rate
by BloggerInParadise on Sep.01, 2010, under News
Thank goodness our county leaders listened and managed to keep from raising our taxes. I expected at least a small raise, but they did their job and kept it down during these tough times. Read More.
It’s still August
by BloggerInParadise on Aug.30, 2010, under Real Estate Discussion
I usually don’t do Open Houses in August because no one is around. Did one on Sunday in Rapallo because the listing agent couldn’t and had promised to have it open. Nice condo on the lake. It’s near the Coconut Point shopping center and you can walk there for shopping or the restaurants. Proved again that August is a time to take a vacation. Only a couple of people came by, but still it had a nice view and I got some work done while it rained outside.
A great place to go for an evening!
by BloggerInParadise on Aug.28, 2010, under Meanderings
I have to give this place a plug. The Sandy Parrot on US 41 near Alico Rd is unique in that not only does it have good music, a good bar, and great waitresses, the food is actually quite good. Fresh fish, good steaks and burgers, and more (try the Tiki Rolls). Usually, a place called a Tiki Hut doesn’t have good food, but the Sandy Parrot breaks out from that. It’s great to sit out in the hut area and enjoy tropical weather and listen to the music. Early in the evening the place is filled with above average age adults dancing and having fun. As the night goes on the younger crowd comes in. It’s a fun place with good food that is busy even in the off season due to its popularity among the locals. If you want a casual evening with good food and drinks, definitely give it a try. Here’s a link to website at theSandyParrot.com. Reservations are a good idea.

Koreshan Unity Settlement
by BloggerInParadise on Aug.22, 2010, under Meanderings
We went to visit the Koreshan State Park in Estero this weekend. This was one of several communal societies in the U.S. at the turn of the century. The group came to Estero in 1894 and founded their settlement on land provided by Gustav Damkohler. They flourished for awhile and then began to die out and the last of them donated the 305 acres to the state in 1961. Probably part of the cause was their belief in celibacy. It’s hard to have more Koreshians with celibacy as the rule! Another interesting belief they had was that we lived on the inside of the earth, not on the outside. They “proved” it mathematically and offered $10,000 to anyone that could show that their “proof” was incorrect. The money was never claimed. Either we’re living on the inside or no one could disprove their math??? Very interesting place to visit. You can view the old buildings, camp, fish, canoe down the Estero river, etc. Definitely drop by and spend some time there. Here are some links to additional info. Florida State Parks. Fresh Florida Lobster
by BloggerInParadise on Aug.04, 2010, under News, Uncategorized

The season for fresh lobster is upon us and will last through March. Our seafood here is great and has had no oil added. There are a number of restaurants with their own boats. One – Pincher’s Crabshack – has their own boats and just opened a new restaurant in the Gulf Coast Town Center. It has a fish market attached and the fish can’t be fresher and the prices are right. Click the link above for their locations. For the story and recipe Click Here.
Small dog dies after being left in hot car in south Fort Myers
by BloggerInParadise on Aug.04, 2010, under News, Uncategorized
People! Animals, children, seniors – if you leave them in the car even for a short time, they will die. These stories happen regularly and for some reason it doesn’t click with people. You can’t leave living things in the car and expect them to survive. Often people go inside for a “quick” whatever and get sidetracked. The result is as in the story which you can read here. Even in the winter here in Florida the internal temperature of your car can quickly reach over 100 degrees in a short time. If you can’t take your dog inside, leave it at home. The few extra minutes it takes to go home should be worth your dog’s/kid’s/senior’s life. End of rant.
Life in the swamp
by BloggerInParadise on Jul.29, 2010, under Meanderings
My brother and part of his family came out this weekend to visit. Decided we would go the the Corkscrew Sanctuary (click here for its website). I’ve been there a few times and it’s always interesting. I’ve gone in the winter time before. That’s our dry season. I was looking forward to seeing it during the wet season. Quite a difference. Areas that were dry or just damp before were now submerged. When you go there you walk along a raised boardwalk that’s a couple miles long and you see the variety of environments that exist in the swamp as well as unusual animals and plants. This is a trip well worth taking when you come here to visit. Click on the thumbnails to see larger versions of them.

I just got my Droid X
by BloggerInParadise on Jul.29, 2010, under Uncategorized
First smartphone. Since I’m on Verizon (not a plug, but they do have the best coverage in Fl). Simply amazing. I’m an MCP-Microsoft Certified Professional. I ran a WAN consisting of 5 offices. It’s simply amazing what I can do on this thing. Just sold house due greatly to the abilities of the Droid. I’m sure that some of the other top smart phones have similar capabilities, but you’re always tied to your service provider and what they sell. Extremely happy with this one. By the way, even thought they say it won’t run Microsoft Exchange until the OS is upgraded to 2.2, I’m running it right now with no problems. Maybe the update will provide more of something.

Thank goodness it looks like we are definitely OK again this week. Beaches oil free, fishing area expanding out from SWFL. This is good. The incoming tropical storm will probably keep us off the beach this weekend, but looking great for next week. As along as the BP hole holds all should be well. Read More.
